Barcelona have criticized a deal agreed by LaLiga to sell 10
percent of its business to private equity firm CVC Capital Partners.
The deal is worth ($3.2 billion) and is the first of its
type by a major European league.
It will however see LaLiga retain the management of TV
rights.
Barcelona, still reeling from the news that Lionel Messi
will quit the club after 20 years, claimed the plan “has not been sufficiently
discussed with the clubs (the owners of the TV rights).
“The deal affects part of all clubs’ audiovisual rights for
the next 50 years,” they said in a statement.
“FC Barcelona feels it is inappropriate to sign a
half-century agreement given the uncertainties that always surround the
football world.”
Barcelona and LaLiga have been at loggerheads, as the league
body refused to allow the Catalans register Messi.
The Nou Camp side were found guilty of operating
significantly over the league’s wage rulings and asked to cut down their wage
bill.
Barca president, Joan Laporta, pleaded with LaLiga
officials, claiming: “We want more flexibility from the league to be able to
include more signings.
“The negotiations with Messi are well under way, but we are
fixing several issues on both sides.”
His pleas fell on deaf ears, eventually resulting in the end
of Messi’s 21-year-stay at the club.
