Shehu Sani, former Kaduna Central Senator, has reacted to
the ban of ten of Nigeria’s track and field athletes from taking part in the
ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan.
Recall that on
Wednesday that Nigeria had 10 of its representatives disqualified.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), which runs the
anti-doping program for the sport, said the athletes failed to meet the minimum
testing requirements under Rule 15 of the Anti-Doping Rules for ‘Category A’
federations.
And reacting to the ban, Sani, in a tweet via his Twitter
handle, described the ban as utterly disappointing and disgraceful, adding that
Nigeria went to Tokyo Olympics with a bitterly factionalized Athletics
Federation of Nigeria, AFN.
He tweeted, “Nigeria went to Tokyo with a bitterly
factionalized Athletics Federation of Nigeria AFN; now we have gotten the
result of that division.
“The banning of Ten of our Athletes is utterly disappointing
and disgraceful. We have washed our dirty linen in #Tokyo2020 #TokyoOlympics.”
Meanwhile, the ten athletes disqualified from the
competition include Knowledge Chioma Onyekwere, Annette Echikunwoke, Rosemary
Chukwuma, Glory Patrick, Yinka Ajayi, Tima Godbless, Omovoh, Ruth Usoro, Favor
Ofili and Chidi Okezie.
The track and field competition at Tokyo 2020 begins on
Friday [July 30] and Team Nigeria is yet to win any medal at the Tokyo
Olympics.
