Rivers united fans on Sunday beat up a fan of Akwa United at
Adokiya Amesiamaka stadium during a match between the two clubs.
Trouble started after the football fan raised a placard in
support of his team.
The action was said to have angered the home fans who
allegedly descended on the Akwa United fan.
Also, the centre referee who officiated the match was held hostage by the fans after the match which ended in a 1-1 draw.
It took the intervention of the Rivers state commissioner
for sports, Boma Yaye for the centre referee to be escorted out of the stadium.
Fans were allowed in the stadium in contravention of
COVID-19 protocols.
