The Kaduna police command says the explosion that occurred
in Kaduna, on Saturday, was caused by explosive devices hidden in empty yoghurt
bottles.
There was an explosion in Badarawa area of the state on
Saturday, which resulted in the death of one person, while two others sustained
injuries.
Speaking on the cause of the explosion, Muhammed Jalige,
spokesperson of the Kaduna police command, said the bottles were picked up from
a football field by children who were playing in the area.
A child aged seven was said to have died in the explosion,
while those who sustained injuries are aged nine and seven.
According to NAN, Jalige, who gave an update on the incident
on Sunday, said improvised explosive devices were concealed in three bottles of
a popular children’s yoghurt drink produced by Viju.
“Three children picked up the bottles, but unknown to them,
they contained explosive substance. The children started playing football with
the bottles; as a result, two of the bottles exploded injuring the three
children,” he said.
“The victims were however rushed to Barau Dikko Teaching
Hospital for treatment, where one of them died owing to injuries he sustained
from the explosion.
“One of the victims was treated and discharged, while the
third child is still receiving treatment.
“The Command’s Explosive Ordinance Department (EOD) is
carrying out a holistic forensic analysis of the device with a view to
apprehending those responsible for this heinous act.”
