The House of Representatives has asked the federal government to commence the creation of grazing reserves and ranching in states disposed to it.
This was contained in the report of the Special Committee of the House chaired by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.
The committee had held a two-day public hearing in the face of growing insecurity in the country.
Grazing reserves and other initiatives by the government to end the farmers/herder clashes have failed.
The report was presented by Gbajabiamila and was adopted by the committee of the whole on Tuesday.
According to the report, the ranching and reserves should be established in places with low population areas.
“The use and development of grazing reserves and ranching should be pursued in lower population areas. Pilot schemes should commence immediately in all states that are positively disposed to it,” the lawmakers resolved.
Also, the House resolved to propose legislation for the creation of more development commissions across all the zones. Hence, there will be South-south Development Commission, South-East Development Commission, North-central Development Commission, South-west Development Commission, in addition to the North-east Development Commission.
The Speaker had earlier announced that the recommendations will be presented to President Muhamadu Buhari today.
