Aisha Yesufu, a popular rights activist, has declared that
the blood of innocent citizens killed by Nigerian security operatives during
the End SARS protests will continue to haunt President Muhammadu Buhari.
Nigerians, mostly the youth, had late last October, occupied
major streets in the country, particularly in the Southern region, protesting
against the now disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, a unit of the
Nigeria Police Force.
The protests later generated a call for the resignation of
President Buhari; end of bad governance; demand for accountability by
government officials, among other things.
However, as it grew stronger, the protest was hijacked in
different locations leading to the destruction of government assets and the
attack of homes of some politicians.
But the climax of the crisis that resulted from the protest
was the shooting at Lekki Toll Gate, Lagos State, where soldiers were said to
have killed many protesters.
The Buhari government has insisted that no one died during
the attack despite reports from local and international news media and video
clips on social media saying otherwise.
The Federal Government had also listed the nationwide
demonstration against the notorious Police unit, SARS, as one its reasons for
banning Twitter.
Making a presentation to the House of Representatives Joint
Investigative Committee on Twitter Suspension, Lai. Mohammed, the Minister of
Information and Culture, said, “Twitter raised funds for the EndSARS protesters
before it was hijacked.”
And in a tweet on Tuesday, Aisha Yesufu said, “Nine months
ago unarmed protesters were shot and killed by the government of Muhammadu
Buhari.
“The blood of the innocent youth we failed as a Nation shall
haunt him till the end of time. In his moment of rest he shall hear their
wailing and the anguish of their families. #EndSars.”
