The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the indefinite
postponement of the party’s congresses scheduled to start in July.
The caretaker/extraordinary convention planning committee
(CECPC) had earlier announced that the
ward congresses will hold on July 24, local government congresses on August 14
and state congresses on September 18.
But in a letter dated July 6 to Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of
the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the CECPC informed the
commission of its plans to postpone the congresses.
The letter, which was jointly signed by Mai Mala Buni, the CECPC chairman, and John Akpanudoedehe, its secretary, was said to be in fulfilment of the Electoral Act.
“We refer to our letter reference number
APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/021/20, dated 10, June, 2021, on the above subject and wish to
inform the commission that the party has rescheduled its congresses and
national convention to a later date which will be communicated to you,” the
CECPC said.
“This serves as a formal notification pursuant to the
provisions of section 85 of the Electoral Act (2010) as amended.
“While hoping to receive your cooperation, please accept the
assurance of my highest esteem.”
By implication, the ruling party’s national convention
scheduled for October has been postponed.
The committee had earlier noted that the recent revalidation
exercise conducted by the party recorded over 40 million membership nationwide.
