The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Tuesday, said the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has been arrested.
Malami stated this at a press briefing at the Ministry of Justice in Abuja.
From his arrest to extradition, here are eight things to know about Kanu:
1.Kanu was earlier arrested on October 14, 2015 on 11-count charge involving terrorism, publication of defamatory matter, treasonable felony, illegal possession of firearms, managing an unlawful society, and improper importation of goods, among others.
2.Kanu was granted bail in 2017 by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja but having jumped bail, Nyako, on March 28, 2019, revoked the bail that was granted him on health grounds and issued a bench warrant for his arrest.
3.After jumping bail, Kanu was further accused of engagements in subversive activities that include inciting violence through television, radio and online broadcasts against Nigeria and Nigerian State and institutions.
4.He was also accused of instigating violence especially in the South Eastern Nigeria that resulted in the loss of lives and property of civilians, military, paramilitary, police forces and destruction of civil institutions and symbols of authorities.
5.The AGF revealed that Kanu has been arrested again, through the joint efforts of security services and national intelligence on Sunday, June 27, 2021.
6.With this recent arrest, Kanu has been repatriated to Nigeria to continue his trial after leaving the country while on bail.
7.The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday ordered that Kanu be remanded in the custody of the Department of State Service.
8.The court has adjourned his matter to July 26 and 27, 2021.
