The Presidency has revealed that about 42 offices belonging
to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been destroyed
since the 2019 general elections were concluded.
Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari
on Media and Publicity, made the revelation while reacting to the recent ‘civil
war’ threat by the president which generated controversies earlier in the week.
Recall that President Buhari while receiving a briefing from
the INEC Chairman on the recent attacks on the commission’s facilities
particularly in the Southeastern part of the country, vowed to clamp down on
those behind the attacks.
According to the President, the attacks on government facilities in the region are being sponsored by those who want his administration to fail, stressing that they will soon get the “shock of their lives”.
Recall that the comment did not go down well with some
Nigerians who took to their social media handles to tackle the president.
Following the outrage, Twitter deleted the controversial tweet
which stimulated further reactions as some applauded management of Twitter
while others accused the medium of playing double standard.
However, Adesina explained that Buari’s comment was due to
the negative effects the attacks would have in the forthcoming 2023 general
elections.
According to the presidential aide, 71 percent of the
attacks happened in the last seven months stressing that activities of the Boko
Haram insurgents, EndSARS protesters, bandits, the unknown gunmen and other
incidents led to the destruction of the 42 facilities.
“So far, there have been 42 such attacks across the country
since the 2019 General Election. The incidents occurred in 14 states for a
variety of reasons, including bandit attack, 1, Boko Haram, 1, EndSARS protest,
18, post-election violence, 4, thuggery during elections, 6, unknown gunmen and
hoodlums, 12.
“Thirty out of the 42 or 71% of the attacks happened in the
last 7 months.
“They appear to be targeted at future elections, with the
intention to incapacitate INEC, undermine democracy, and precipitate a national
crisis.
“The INEC Chairman enumerated the immediate implications of
the development, unfolded actions were taken by the Commission and asked for
the intervention of Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
“Confronted by such a graphic display of anarchy, what
should a President do? Throw up his hands in surrender, acquiesce, and tell
everyone to go home in defeat and capitulation?”
