Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, says his government will
not pay those who put up “juju” on roads under construction in the state.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony for the construction
of Allu Omagwa road on Saturday, Wike alleged that some persons erect “juju”
shrines in order to get compensation from the state government.
The governor wondered why youths, instead of going for
gainful and legal employment, would rather turn themselves into “juju priests”.
He said instead of using the so-called “juju priests” to stop bad governance, such persons are busy looking for ways to get money from the state government.
“We send people to do valuation and some of you started
putting juju on the road. Foul!” he said.
“I don’t understand our people. It’s now you know you have
juju priests. You have juju priest since, you cannot stop government that is
harassing you. Why didn’t you use that juju to make them clean the oil? Why
didn’t you use the juju?
“You want to bring juju for compensation, you will not see
one naira. I don’t know how young boys will grow up and you will just see that
they go and put one cloth; they say it is red, then you will see him sitting
down, tying something (around his hand). Let me catch you again. You are doing juju
and saying I should compensate juju.
“So please, I am just telling all of you so that you will
know; those of you that are hoping you will get money because you have gone to
put one fake shrine…tell the shrine to come and see me. Tell the shrine that I
refuse to pay.”
