Katsina: Increasing number of street beggers worrisome – NGO

Katsina State chapter of the Human Right Network has expressed worries over the increasing number of street beggars in Katsina’s major cities.

The State Coordinator, Comrade Abdulaziz Izmah disclosed this in a press statement made available to media organizations.

The statement said bulk of the beggars who are predominantly women and children have become more vulnerable to other social vices.

The statement further disclosed that not all the street beggars are Almajiri students, as victims displaced by bandits were forced into street begging as a result of attacks that ravaged their communities.

Although there are no statistical data of the beggars roaming the streets collected, it is clear that the number of street beggars is increasing at an alarming proportion.

Consequently, the NGO advised Katsina government, the council of Ulama, traditional and religious institutions to look into the possibilities of institutionalizing Zakkat in the State as the best means of empowerment to attain social security.
