Gunmen have attacked Iwollo police division in Ezeagu LGA of
Enugu state.
Five officers were said to have been killed in the attack
which took place in the early hours of Tuesday.
The police station was reportedly razed by the gunmen.
The gunmen were said to have attacked the division in large
numbers and overwhelmed the officers who confronted them.
Mohammed Aliyu, the state commissioner of police, confirmed
the attack.
Aliyu, who could not give details of the incident, said he
was already on the ground to ascertain the level of destruction and casualties.
“More information will be pushed out to the public as soon
as we conclude our preliminary investigation,’’ he said.
This is the latest attack in a series of attacks on police
officers and security facilities in the south-east.
On April 21, gunmen shot two police operatives dead during
an attack on Adani station in Uzo-Uwani LGA of the state.
The gunmen reportedly attacked the station around 2:30am
also set it ablaze.
The killings in the region tripled since the Indigenous
People of Biafra (IPOB) formed its security outfit.
Although south-east governors had launched a joint security
outfit to curb the attacks, the security situation in the region keeps
deteriorating.
