Uche Ogbodo, Nigerian actress cum film producer, says
unmarried women who have attained the age of 30 and above should not
contemplate abortion because they may never be able to conceive again.
The actress spoke in an Instagram live session wherein she addressed women’s struggle with societal pressure when it comes to
marriage and childbearing.
Citing herself as an instance, Ogbodo lamented the
stigmatisation of women who have babies out of wedlock in the society.
The movie star, however, said she remains unperturbed by the
criticisms, noting that she is happy having a boyfriend.
“Many girls between 30 to 40 are dying to be married, to
have a family, doing all sort of things so they can have a baby…some of them
wait till 45 yet no husband. This is because the society will criticise them
for having a baby out of wedlock,” she said.
“You’re aborting a baby at 35 and 40 because of what people
would say, are you okay? When you get to 40 and you’re pregnant without a
husband, please don’t abort it. If you do who will take care of you when you
are old?”
The Enugu-born actress also said women must ditch the
mentality that they must get married at any cost.
“It’s so painful when I see a lot of girls my age, they
don’t look beautiful anymore and they were so pretty. I saw one yesterday I had
to go back to the page to refresh…she was looking haggard, old and ugly,” she
added.
“Please, stop killing your children, especially when you’re
of age. Have your kids. If marriage comes, marry oh, if marriage no come, raise
your children now. It’s not everyone that must get married.
“I’m 34. I already have a kid. This is going to be my second
child. I have a boyfriend who loves me, I’m happy and I’m having my baby.”
The actress tied the knot with Ato Ubby, ex-Nigerian
footballer, in 2013 but the union collapsed barely 10 months after.
The marriage, however, produced a girl, whom the pair
welcomed in 2014 before parting ways.
Ogbodo had recently disclosed that she is expecting her
second baby.
