The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus
Keyamo (SAN), has reacted to the mass shooting in the US city of Indianapolis
which happened on Thursday.
Eight people were killed when a gunman opened fire at a
FedEx Ground facility before proceeding to kill himself.
Reacting, Keyamo lamented the statistics on shootings in the
US, stressing that insecurity is a global phenomenon.
He then advised Nigerians against ethnicising and
politicising their own state of insecurity.
“Yet, another mass shooting in the USA today. The statistics
in the US is staggering. However, it’s no excuse for our state of insecurity
& it is immoral for us to compare & say ours is even lesser. But we
should stop ethnicising & politicising what is clearly a global
phenomenon,” he tweeted.
One @Agezoid on Twitter reacted to the Minister’s post,
saying, “Bad things happen overseas and you guys are quick to compare saying
it’s not only in Nigeria. Where you dey when the U.S. government announce their
covid stimulus package? What about the good governance there or is that one not
a global phenomenal too?”
A reaction from @Chief_Moze said, “Dear Hon. Minister
@fkeyamo the mass shooters in America are always identified and prosecuted
accordingly. But in our clime under your govt, they are always unknown and
often pardoned and rehabilitated, while the victims are left unattended at
emergency IDPs.”
@Michael_Erhabor said, “Yet they will investigate and nab
the shooter. But those that keep maiming innocent citizens here in Nigeria are
still at large. Nobody can bring them to book. The atmosphere to even thrive is
not there in the first place, yet you want to compare Nigeria to America. Fear
God sir.”
According to @harcmord, “Believing the news about increase
in mass shooting in the US, especially when the news is been aired by @cnni, is
not an issue. But quickly debunk(ing) such when it’s been said against our
country, especially when it’s coming from the said media house isn’t just
worrisome but hypocritical.”
@Gbemiro said, “US is having problems with their guns that
no other western nation is facing. But our minister is using it to justify
terrorist activities largely perpetrated by a section of the country and
pampered by their political class.”
