Ryan Giggs, former
Manchester United player, has been charged to court for allegedly assaulting
two women late last year.
The embattled Wales manager was also charged with coercive
or controlling behaviour and will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’
court on April 28.
According to the BBC, the 47-year-old is said to
have “caused actual bodily harm to a woman in her 30s and common assault of a
woman in her 20s at an address in Salford last November.”
In his reaction to the allegations, Giggs said that he would clear his name of the charges in court.
“I have full respect
for the due process of law and understand the seriousness of the allegations; I
look forward to clearing my name,” he said.
The Football Association of Wales (FAW) also announced that
Giggs will not lead the country to the rescheduled Euro 2020 tournament.
According to the association, Robert Page, his assistant
manager, will take charge of Wales at the upcoming European championships.
“The Football
Association of Wales has noted the decision of The Crown Prosecution Service to
proceed with charging Ryan Giggs, the Men’s National Team Manager,” FAW said
in a statement on Friday.
“In light of this decision, the FAW can confirm that Robert
Page will assume the role of Cymru Men’s National Team manager for this
summer’s EURO 2020 tournament and will be assisted by Albert Stuivenberg.”
Giggs, who spent 24 years at Man United and is one of
British football’s most-decorated footballers, has been Wales manager Since
January 2018, leading them to qualification for Euro 2020.
