Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) say the country is gradually moving towards becoming a failed state
if the current trend of security challenges continues.
Speaking on Friday after a meeting of the PDP governors’
forum in Makurdi, Benue state capital, Aminu Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto and
chairman of the forum, said the country is experiencing an alarming drift under
the watch of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tambuwal, who read the communiqué issued at the end of the
meeting, said the governors expressed deep concern over the deteriorating
relations between various groups in the country, saying the APC government
lacks the capacity to govern.
The PDP governors said Nigeria is in dire need of leadership
at the federal level to avert “looming disaster”.
“The meeting noted and condemned the alarming drift of
Nigeria which if allowed to continue, will make Nigeria a failed state under
the watch of the All Progressives Congress government,” Tambuwal said.
“The meeting was similarly alarmed that security of lives
and property of Nigerians are no longer guaranteed under the present government
as a result of leadership incompetence and mismanagement of the nation’s
affairs.
“While noting that governors have a role to play in the
handling of some of the worsening situations, they regret their hands are tied
behind their backs as the entire coercive authority in the country is
monopolised by the APC federal government.
“Time has come to take advantage of the ongoing Constitution
Amendment process to decentralise the security architecture of Nigeria and
involve state and local governments.”
The governors also aligned with the calls for restructuring
of the country, stating that the process will bring together various groups, as
Nigeria cannot afford another civil war.
