A member of the Nigerian Senate, Enyinnaya Abaribe has said
that it was regrettable that General Azubuike Ihejirika, who was made the Chief
of Army Staff by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government is now working
for the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Abaribe, who represents Abia South senatorial zone, said
that his greatest regret is seeing Ihejirika campaign for promoting the APC, a
party that, according to the lawmaker, has so much disdain for South East.
Abaribe made the statement Thursday, while featuring as a
guest on magic FM, Aba. He said, “My greatest regret in the entire campaign is
seeing Gen. Ihejirika coming to campaign in Aba.”
He noted that the PDP administration recognized Igbos in the
military by making Ihejirika the COAS for the first time.
“The same man is supporting a party that has so much disdain
for Igbos. Ihejirika is with APC that has pushed out our people to a point that
you hardly see any Igbo in the top rank of the military and other forces. It’s
an unfortunate one,” Abaribe said.
The lawmaker further noted that in the midst of the current
spate of insecurity in the country, no lawmaker elected on the platform of the
APC from South East has summoned the courage to speak up.
“People are being kidnapped and killed in all parts of the
country including Southeast, Abia and Isiukwuato LGA where Ihejirika hails
from, yet no APC member from these areas have come up to condemn the killings.
“No APC senator from the Southeast has called on the
Presidency to sit up and solve insecurity problems,“ he stated.
