The Zamfara State government has refuted the claim that one person died at Jengebe Government Girls Secondary School premises during a protest by parents who demanded that their rescued children be released to them.
In an interview with newsmen in Gusau, the State capital, the Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs, Hon. Abubakar Mohammed Dauran said he was not aware that there was even a protest at the school’s premises yesterday.
But it was learnt that the main cause of the protest was that the state government did not bring the released girls in time to hand them over to their parents after they had been sleeping in the school premises for some number of days waiting to receive their children.
Our correspondent reports that the release of the girls witnessed another unfortunate incident that reportedly led to the death of one person in the town while some people were equally injured.
It was gathered that the victim was shot by security operatives who were said to have opened fire after an angry mob kicked against the insistence on a formal handover before the girls’ parents could leave with them.
This action forced the state government to impose curfew on the town and suspended market activities in order to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
