The House of Representatives on Wednesday urged President Muhamadu Buhari to get foreign mercenaries to help in the fight against insurgents.
The House on Wednesday made the resolution following a motion moved by Abdulkadir Rahis from Borno State on the recent spike in Boko Haram’s attacks on Maiduguri.
An amendment by Mansur Sorro from Bauchi State urged the federal government to adopt the use of foreign fighters.
It would be recalled that governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State had on two occasions called for the use of foreign mercenaries. The governor raised the issue just last week during the NorthEast governors forum.
He also made the suggestions in 2020.
However, President Muhamadu Buhari as an opposition figure in 2014 kicked against the policy, which was in play by the Goodluck Jonathan administration.
The House has now joined Governor Zulum to urge the President to reconsider the option of foreign paid fighters.
Moving the motion, Rahis, reminded the House of the 23rd of February attack by the insurgents that claimed 16 lives and left 60 injured.
“The attack was one of the most daring as the terrorists indiscriminately launched rockets into the city which inflicted mass destruction on the populace,” he said.
