Declaring for presidency now is unfair – Senator Orji Uzor Kalu

Former Governor of Abia State and Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has said that declaring his ambition or by anyone else for the presidential election now is unfair and will create problems in the country.

He stated that rather, those nursing the desire should at least allow President Muhammadu Buhari to serve out half of his second tenure.

Kalu stated this during a chat with newsmen in Minna, after meeting with Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, former Generals Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar in their residences in Minna.

The lawmaker, however, stated that he will declare whether to run or not in the presidential election at the end of 2021 or early 2022.

” It will be very, very unfair to say anything on that and mind you, I am not in Niger state for that. Ask me this question in December 2021 or January 2022, I might answer you. But, now, let us allow President Buhari to get to half of his second term.

” The moment you say Uzor Kalu will run, Jack will run, Peter will run, Bamisaye will run, it will pose a problem. So, the issue is allow the man to get halfway his tenure.”

He further stated that the issue of the presidential seat is for the All Progressives Congress, APC, to determine where the candidate emerges from.

On rotation of power, Kalu noted that allowing the presidential seat to rotate among the various zones would engender peace, unity and build capacity.

Speaking on the recent attacks happening in Abia state, the lawmaker said, “Attacks are happening everywhere. Young people are restive, when such happens, we need to nip it in the bud by collectively working together for peace to reign.”

Earlier, in General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s residence, Senator Kalu called on the former heads of state to advise the President on ways of finding lasting solutions to the problems facing the nation.

He lamented that currently, there is no place that is safe in the country as hoodlums have taken over places, noting that the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable while he sympathized with parents of the students in captivity.

Responding, Gen. Abubakar thanked him for the visit to sympathize with the state, adding that there is strength in Nigeria’s diversity and all hands must be on deck to enhanced its peace and unity.

The elder statesman then urged Non-Governmental Organizations to mobilize the people in building peace in order to encourage investors in o the country.
