Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State has alleged an
agenda to deprive school children, especially those from the educationally
disadvantaged Northern region of going to school.
Bello stated this during a courtesy call paid him by his
colleagues led by the Ekiti State Governor and Chairman Nigerian Governors
Forum, NGF, Dr. Kayode Fayemi in Minna.
He lamented that the current spate of attacks on schools in
the north, which already has a low level of education, would discourage
children who desire to acquire education.
Bello asked the government to all means protect the children
from intimidations while in school, adding that the kidnap of school children
in Katsina State and those of the Government Science College in Kagara, Niger
State is enough pointer to that effect.
“We should not subject our school children that have chosen
the right path by going to school to be intimidated by some unscrupulous
elements in the society. We need to take this seriously especially, in the part
of the country where the education level is low.”
“Once, they go to school, it is our responsibility to take
very good care of them. I think there is an agenda somewhere, somehow to
deprive our young ones of a good education.”
It would be recalled that following the kidnap of students
in Karaga, Governor Bello ordered the closure of boarding schools in four
council areas last week Thursday, until further notice.
The governor explained that the state would employ dialogue
with their abductors to secure their release and afterwards, enter another
dialogue with gunmen terrorizing parts of the state for peace to return to the
state.
He, however, warned that the needful will be done to those
“who chose terrorism and depriving others of their assets with no signs of
repentance.”
