United States Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell has
hinted that the upper chamber of the US Congress will not impeach President
Donald Trump.
The House Representatives impeached Trump on Wednesday as
punishment for the Capitol Building invasion by his supporters.
Ten Republicans joined Democrats in the voting. The result
was 232-197.
In a statement, McConnell suggested it was too late to commence
a similar process.
“There is simply no chance that a fair or serious trial
could conclude before President-elect, Biden is sworn in next week”, he wrote.
The lawmaker said even if the Senate commenced an action
this week and moved promptly, no final verdict would be reached until Trump had
left office.
“This is not a decision I am making; it is a fact,”
McConnell declared.
He advised the US Congress to spend the coming days focusing
on facilitating an orderly transfer of power to the incoming Biden administration.
