The United States senate will begin the impeachment trial of
former President Donald Trump over alleged incitement leading to the Capitol
violence.
Thousands of demonstrators loyal
to Trump invaded the Capitol Hill on
January 6 while the certification of Joe Biden was ongoing.
Four protesters and a police officer died in the violence.
Shortly after the incident, the US house of representatives
commenced impeachment proceeding against Trump and on January 13, he was
impeached for a record second time,
paving the way for a senate trial.
According to some Democrats in the US senate, the
impeachment trial of the erstwhile president will begin on Tuesday.
Chuck Schumer, senate majority leader, said the house would
deliver the impeachment article on Monday.
“The Senate will conduct a trial of the impeachment of
Donald Trump. It will be a full trial. It will be a fair trial,” Schumer said.
If convicted, Trump could be barred from contesting in
future election.
There are reports that Trump is interested in running for
the presidency in 2024. Although the immediate past US president has not stated
this publicly, he hinted at this in his last chat with reporters at White
House.
Shortly before boarding the aircraft which ferried him out
of the seat of power in America, Trump said goodbye to journalists, saying: “I
hope it won’t be a long goodbye.”
