The election officer for US state of Georgia, Brad
Raffensperger, has admitted that there was illegal voting in the state during
Tuesday presidential election.
However, Raffensperger, whose office oversees Georgia’s
election, added that he doubts if the number of such illegal votes would upturn
the result.
“Was there illegal voting? I am sure there was. And my
office is investigating all of it,” he said, according to BBC.
“Does it rise to the numbers or margin necessary to change
the outcome to where President Trump is given Georgia’s electoral votes? That
is unlikely,” Raffensperger added.
According to US electoral guideline, States must resolve
recounts and court contests over the results by 8 December while the outcome of
the election will be finalised when members of the US Electoral College meet on
14 December.
Meanwhile, senior members of the incumbent political party
have largely refused to pressure their candidate to concede defeat to Joe Biden
of the Democratic Party.
Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell on Monday lashed
Democrats over the election results.
Speaking on the floor of the Senate on Monday, the Kentucky
lawmaker said, “Let’s not have any lectures, no lectures about how the
president should immediately, cheerfully accept preliminary election results
from the same characters who just spent four years refusing to accept the
validity of the last election and who insinuated that this one would be
illegitimate too if they lost again – only if they lost.”
McConnell said Trump has every right to “look into
allegations and to request recounts under the law and notably the Constitution
gives no role in this process to wealthy media corporations.”
The presidential election was tightly contested between the
incumbent President and candidate of the Republican Party, Donald Trump and Joe
Biden of the Democratic Party.
Although the winner of the election has not been officially
declared, the media on Saturday projected Joe Biden as the President-elect
after he scored over 270 electoral college votes.
However, President Donald Trump has rejected the result
citing massive irregularities and election fraud in key battleground states
where he believes he was leading.
Prominent Republicans congressmen had earlier urged Trump to
“fight hard” and not concede defeat in the race.
The lawmaker said the President’s allegation of election
fraud and irregularities must be investigated.
The top Republican congressmen said they will work with the
Democratic Party government if Biden wins, but insisted that Trump did not
lose.
Although some other top members of the ruling party were
more guarded in their comments, they nonetheless refused to acknowledge Biden
as the winner of the tightly contested presidential election.
