All is now set for the inaugural sitting of the Judicial panel set up by Governor Dapo Abiodun to investigate complaints of police brutality, human rights violations and extra-judicial killings by security operatives in Ogun State.
The sitting began at 10:08am on Thursday at the Magistrates Court 1 in Isabo, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
In his inaugural speech, the Chairman of the panel, Hon. Justice Solomon Olugbemi (Rtd), said the panel will not entertain cases of brutality that are already before a court.
Olugbenle said “if your matter is already in court, wait for the court to make a decision.”
The Chairman also clarified that the panel is not a trial court as he urged lawyers not to use technicalities to delay sittings.
While assuring that all relevant evidences will be accepted, Olugbemi said the panel will make appropriate recommendations in all petitions.
He warned that no petitioner should be threatened by any person under any guise, adding that anyone who does so will be prosecuted.
