‘#EndSARS’, ‘who is anonymous?’,
and ‘where is Tinubu?’ are some of the keywords and questions that topped Google searches in Nigeria during October.
On Wednesday, Google released a
list of top-10 keywords and questions that dominated its search query for this
month.
A milestone anniversary, which
was Nigeria’s Independence Day; calls to shut down the special anti-robbery
squad (SARS) unit of the Nigerian police; and the Ondo election results came
tops for the Google keyword category.
However, these searches partially
crossed over into the most asked questions, which concerned Aisha Yesufu, an
activist; the whereabouts of the President Mohammadu Buhari; and the location
of Bola Tinubu, a politician.
On October 1, Nigeria celebrated
the 60th anniversary of its independence from Great Britain but this had turned
into a day of protest across major cities as people expressed their anger over
the hike in petrol and electricity prices.
Protests continued throughout the
month as the #EndSARS campaign continued to gain global momentum until when men
in army uniforms opened fire on unarmed protesters at the Lekki toll gate in
Lagos on October 22.
“Ondo election result” was the
third most popular search term for the month as the poll had seen Rotimi
Akeredolu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reelected as governor of the
state after winning by a significant margin.
Other topics that trended in
October included actress Eniola Badmus, who was falsely rumoured to have been
shot during the #EndSARS protests, and Lil Frosh, who was arrested for alleged assault on Gift Camille, his girlfriend.

for the month

gleaned from data collated by Google based on what Nigerians ask the search
engine.
