Edinson Cavani looks set to miss
Manchester United’s next Premier League fixture against Newcastle, as he will
still be quarantining, the UK Times reports.
The Uruguayan striker, who joined
the club as a free agent this summer, does not meet the criteria for elite
athlete exemption.
While most new arrivals to the
Premier League are free to link up with their clubs immediately, Cavani’s
situation is different, because he has not been part of a secure bubble.
The 33-year-old has been mixing
with the general population of Paris for months and not been getting tested
regularly in a secure environment, which means government rules apply to him.
United are still seeking
clarification on the matter, but under current regulations, he will need to
quarantine for 14 days.
Cavani is currently doing so
right now, with his period having begun on Sunday when he arrived in
Manchester.
United’s next game is on
Saturday, October 17 at St James’ Park, which comes just too soon for Cavani to
be involved, if he definitely needs to fulfil the full two-week quarantine.
