Debo Adebayo, a Nigerian comedian
better known as Mr Macaroni, has criticised how the president and his
administration are handling the ongoing protests.
The comedian spoke on Sunday when
he featured on Rubbin Minds, a programme on Channels TV.
He said it is unfortunate that
the president’s team has resorted to using tweets rather than give Nigerians
day-to-day situation reports on what actions the government is taking to
address the concerns of the protesters.
“They move from state to state during elections to make promises to the people so when those who elected them into power are crying, they have no business sending tweets to them,” he said.
“They need to wake up and talk to
the people, they are used to sleeping. When the Nigerian youths see that the
government is serious, then the protests will stop.”
Mr Macaroni said the protesters
will only leave the streets when they see the government taking decisive
actions to address the issues raised.
Citing the various attacks on
protesters across the country, he said the federal government has failed to
protect the lives of people demanding an end to police brutality.
“What government is expected to
do in situations like these is to show a sign of good faith. They kept saying
that they’re working but there are decisive actions that can be taken that
would prove to Nigerian youths that they are beginning to listen and ready to
act,” he said.
“Why not meet the protesters’
demands first, why not begin to take action? We are protesting and our lives
are not even secured. Safety is still a concern, so we cannot even talk about
any other thing until every Nigerian youth is sure that his or her life safe.”
