Philip Shaibu, deputy governor of Edo and running mate of
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the Edo gubernatorial election,
has lost the election in Etsako west, his local government area.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)
announced the results at 3:50am on Sunday.
The PDP secured 17,959 votes while the All Progressives
Congress (APC) polled 26,140 votes.
Adams Oshiomhole, former governor of Edo state and suspended
chairman of the APC, is also from Etsako west.
Oshiomhole has since thrown his weight behind Osagie
Ize-Iyamu, APC governorship candidate in the state.
Although Shaibu and his principal, Godwin Obaseki, had
contested under the APC during the 2016 election, they both defected to the PDP
following the incumbent governor’s disqualification from seeking a second term
on the APC platform.
