COVID-19-positive WASSCE candidate in Gombe taken in ambulance to Chemistry exam centre

A candidate who tested positive for COVID-19 in Gombe State wrote his second paper in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination under close monitoring on Tuesday.

The unnamed student of Gombe Senior Secondary School, Gombe, was transported to his school laboratory in an ambulance from his isolation centre to enable him to write his Chemistry practical examination.

The Gombe State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre disclosed these in a message posted on its Twitter handle, @GombePHEOC, on Tuesday.

The centre had on Monday announced that the candidate who tested positive to the virus on Sunday wrote his first examination, Mathematics, from his isolation centre.

In the latest message posted on Tuesday, the centre said the candidate was transported to his school under Infection Prevention and Control.

The message read, “COVID-19 cannot stop our positive student from writing the practical Chemistry today.

“We ensured that; he was transported under IPC to the Chemistry laboratory in his school.

“The invigilator was counselled and given Personal Protective Equipment and the laboratory was decontaminated afterwards.”

Attached to the message are photographs of the candidate where he was writing his examination and where he posed with others with the ambulance in the background among others.

The earlier message posted on Monday about the candidate had read, “Health and education are a priority in Gombe State.

“A final year student of GSSS Gombe tested positive for COVID-19 and was isolated yesterday (Sunday), today (Monday), he is writing Mathematics SSCE while ensuring his invigilator is well protected.”

The message was accompanied with two photographs depicting the candidate and his fully kitted invigilator.

The tweet attracted commendation from many Twitter users including the Director-General, Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu.

Ihekweazu, who was one of those tagged, responded via his Twitter handle, @Chikwe_I.

He wrote, “Good work by our colleagues in #Gombe.

“There are many exceptional colleagues, quietly pushing to make or country work. #Thankyou #keeppushing.”
