COVID-19: Africa cases hit 1 million, WHO lists 10 most affected nations

Coronavirus cases in Africa have surpassed 1 million.

The Africa Centre of Disease Control (CDC) gave the update on Friday.

CDC confirmed that the continent has recorded 22,066 deaths.

South Africa is the worst-affected country.

It is the fifth worst-hit in the world with more than half a million cases and over 9,000 deaths.

John Nkengasong, head of the Africa CDC, confirmed that 10 countries account for 80 per cent of coronavirus cases.

They are South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, Kenya, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Uganda and Mauritius.

Each has conducted more than 200,000 tests.

“The course of the pandemic in Africa has been much less than we predicted,” said Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organisation (WHO) Director for Africa.

In May, the United Nations agency warned the virus could cause 10 million infections on the continent within six months.
