The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has
fixed September 19 for the Edo governorship election and October 10 for that of
Ondo.
Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, disclosed this on Thursday
during a press briefing in Abuja.
Both states are under the control of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) and the governors are seeking another term.
At the press conference where Yakubu announced the dates of
the elections, the INEC chairman also said the commission deregistered 74
political parties, leaving only 18 recognised parties in Nigeria that can
contest subsequent polls.
According to him, 75 parties did not satisfy the requirement
but one went to court to challenge the move to deregister it.
