Saturday Glory and Aniebet Ekong,
players with Police Machine Football Club in Uyo, were killed by a hit and run
car on Tuesday.
The Nigeria Women Professional
League (NWPL) confirmed the incident in a statement on their official website.
The incident occurred after the
team’s training session on Tuesday evening in Uyo.
Six persons were hit by the car,
three out of the six are Police Machine players.
The Police Machine team have been
preparing for their NWPL relegation playoff which is supposed to take place in
Lokoja.
The two players were confirmed
dead on the spot while Monica Anthony, a teammate of the deceased is in
intensive care receiving treatment.
Aisha Falode, chairperson of the
NWPL expressed shock and sadness over the death of both players.
“It is with great sadness that we
receive the news of the death of two young players of Pro-League side Police
Machine FC,” Falode said.
“We are all devastated at this
tragic passing of Saturday Glory and Aniebet Ekong.
“The thoughts of everyone at the
NWFL are with the families of the deceased, their friends, teammates, the
management and everyone connected to the club at this difficult period.”
