A 23-year-old applicant, Olaniyi Sokunle, on Friday appeared
in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly being in possession of
illegal firearms.
The defendant, who resides in Mazamaza area of Mile II,
Lagos, is charged with two counts of conspiracy and possession of firearms.
The Prosecution Counsel, ASP Peter Nwangwu, said the
defendant committed the offence with some others who are at large, on April 8,
at 1 p.m. at Alakija, Mazamaza, Lagos.
Nwanngwu said the defendant was arrested by a team of the
Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) with one locally-made pistol.
He said during a stop-and-search by the squad, the item was
recovered from the defendant.
Nwangwu said the offence contravened the provisions of
Sections 330 (d) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
If convicted he is liable to 14 years for illegal possession
of firearms.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Yewande Aje-Afunwa, admitted the
defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum,
Aje-Afunwa ordered that the sureties must show evidence of
tax payments to the Lagos State Government.
She adjourned the case until July 4 for mention.
