Senator James Manager
representing Delta South Senatorial district has stated that the Nigerian
Senate was fond of passing bills that were not serious and of no relevance to
Nigerians.
Speaking during plenary on
Wednesday in reaction to the bill for an “Act to amend the National Institute
of Legislative and Democratic Studies and for other matters connected thereto,
2019″, sponsored by the Senate leader, Ahmed Lawan and two others, he argued
that the bill was not necessary now.
James Manager warned that the
bill would be one of those to be turned back by President Muhammadu Buhari,
while advised the sponsors to withdraw the bill.
Mr. President, distinguished
colleagues, the Senate has been passing bills that are not serious and this
bill is one of those bills.”
“Lawmaking does not end here, it
goes to the executive and Mr. President will not sign it and because of the
calibre of people behind the bill, they should put heads together and do
something about it”, Senator Manager insisted.
Earlier in the debate, the Deputy
Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu recalled that the Institute received amendment
from the name it used to bear to what it bears now.
He said, it would be
counterproductive to change the name now, noting that the current status should
be allowed to function for some time.
Having lost support from
lawmakers, Senator Ahmed Lawan who read the lead debate on behalf of two other
sponsors, Baba Kaka Garba and Senator Peter Nwaoboshi withdrew the bill.
The withdrawal was sustained by
the Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki after it was seconded.
DAILY POST reports that about 38
bills passed into law by Dr Bukola Saraki led 8th Senate were declined assent
by President Muhammadu Buhari in the last three and half years.
