Gombe killings unfortunate - Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari said on Tuesday that he was saddened by the killing of nine Christian youths and two security officials in Gombe State on Monday.

He described the killing of the youths and the retaliation which resulted in the death of security officials as tragic and unfortunate.

A Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps official, Mr Abdullahi Adamu, had rammed his Honda Civic into a Boys’ Brigade procession after a disagreement over the right of way, killing nine of the boys instantly.

The Boys’ Brigade members, drawn from St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Madaki, and two parishes of the Evangelical Church Winning All in Bamusa and Barunde, were holding the procession to mark Easter when Adamu rammed his car into them.

Close to 30 of the boys were said to have been injured.

In an angry reaction, the Boys’ Brigade members also lynched Adamu and another occupant of the car, causing tension in Gombe for hours on Monday.

In his reaction to the development, Buhari condoled with the families of the victims.

However, the President expressed his displeasure with what he called “quick resort to self-help and mob action”.

His reaction was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu.

The statement read partly, “Joining the Christian Association of Nigeria, Gombe State chapter, and state government in appealing for calm, President Buhari also decried the reckless driving as well as ‘quick resort to self-help and mob action.’

“According to him, ‘we must always be mindful of the peaceful action of others while resisting the urge to take the laws into our own hands, notwithstanding the gravity of provocation.’

“The President commends the leadership of the police and NSCDC for the steps taken in bringing the situation under control and promises further investigations into the sad incident.”
