The Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has replaced the card readers destroyed at
the head office of the commission in Anambra state on Tuesday.
A container laden with card
readers was burnt at the commission office in Awka, the state capital. Festus
Okoye, a national commissioner of INEC, had said 4,635 card readers were
destroyed in the inferno.
But the commission said it had
replaced the burnt card readers in 14 local government areas and that it is
“working hard” to replace the card readers in the remaining seven LGAs.
“After the fire incident in our
office in Anambra State, replacement Card Readers for 14 LGAs have been
configured and delivered,” it said in a tweet.
“Working hard on the remaining 7
LGAs – Ayamelum, Ogbaru, Idemili North, Idemili South, Aguata, Awka North and
Oyi.”
