The apex Igbo socio-cultural
organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has reacted to the threat by the Kaduna State
Governor, Nasir El-Rufai that foreigners who interfere in the forthcoming
elections will be put in “body bags”.
The spokesperson of Ohanaeze, Chuks Ibegbu said El-Rufai’s threat was appropriate
if it was targeted against foreigners plotting to compromise the forthcoming
election.
Ibegbu, however, stated that if
the threat was against countries like the United States, US, and other western
countries that have shown concern over Nigeria’s democracy then it’s
inappropriate.
He said: “Well for me if it’s
targeted against foreigners who are coming to compromise our elections then he
is right, foreigners have no business interfering with our elections.
“Foreigners from any angle have
no business interfering with our elections, it’s not done anywhere. There is no
country where foreigners interfere in their elections so if his concern is
genuine and not bias, then he is right.
“Foreigners should not interfere
in our elections and I just hope by foreigners he doesn’t mean those that are
concerned about the credibility of our elections like the United States,
Europe, if these are the foreigners he’s referring to then he doesn’t mean
well.”
