Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho, has been “given the go-ahead to sign Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur”, as he looks to secure a top-class centre back for his leaky defence.
The UK Sun reports that Mourinho agreed on January transfer targets in a recent meeting with the club’s executive vice chairman, Ed Woodward, as well as his agent Jorge Mendes.
Alderweireld was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in the summer, after he failed to agree terms over a contract extension at White Hart Lane.
The Belgian’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the season, but Tottenham retain the right to extend it by another year.
However, that will activate a £25million release clause.
The Belgium international has made 19 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side this campaign.
