Presidential candidate of the All
Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, has said plans are underway for
his administration to raise Nigeria’s power generation to 11,000MW by 2023.
This was contained in the
President’s manifesto for reelection in 2019 titled: ‘Next Level’.
Recall that Buhari had in his
2018 new year message announced that his administration has achieved 7000MW of
on-grid power generation.
However, a breakdown of President
Buhari’s plan for the power sector indicates that he intends to add another
4000MW in four years, if reelected next year.
According to the document, the
APC flagbearer would pursue a minimum 1000MW incremental power capacity on the
grid each year till 2023.
Additionally, the manifesto
captures a plan by the President to expand the country’s distribution capacity
which is currently estimated at 5000MW.
Under the off-grid power
projects, President Buhari pledged to energise nine additional universities
with uninterrupted solar power supply when the first phase involving 37
universities have been completed.
Also, he is promising to
stimulate, through off-grid energy, activities in 300 markets apart from Sura,
Ariaria, and 14 other markets currently benefiting from a combination of solar
and wind power initiatives.
