The Secretary, All Progressives Congress in Lagos State, Dr Wale Ahmed, has described as historic the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to recognise June 12 as Democracy Day, saying it is a better date than May 29 that had hitherto been recognised.
Ahmed, in an interview in Calabar on Sunday, also tasked President Buhari to start recognising deserving Nigerians in their lifetimes, such as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who fought for the enthronement of democracy.
According to Ahmed, the declaration of June 12 as the real Democracy Day is one of the best, most altruistic and most justifiable actions of President Buhari.
He said, “This action does justice to our collective sense of contemporary democratic history in Nigeria by recognising the painful and bloody sacrifice of the multitude that died and many who lost loved ones, their means of livelihood as well as those who had their careers aborted as a result of the event to enthrone democracy through the June 12 struggle.
“I have always believed that one day, a leader with a deep sense of justice and high sense of responsibility and fairness would give adequate recognition to the watershed which June 12 represents in Nigeria’s political and democratic experience.”
