The people of Ogba Egbema Ndoni
Local Government Area of Rivers have issued a fourteen-day ultimatum to the
federal government to meet all of their demands; failure of which they will
shut down operations of oil companies in the area.
The threat followed the
expiration of an initial fourteen days ultimatum issued by the Onelga people
which they said the federal government has refused to respond to.
Addressing a press conference in
Omoku the headquarters of Onelga , the chairman of Onelga Stakeholders Forum,
Ekperi Neslon said it was disheartening that the people have been relegated
despite their level of economic contribution to the country.
The people among other things
demanded that the Federal and State government develop a blueprint one month
from today to turn Onelga to a mega city.
“We have suffered so much in
hands of these multinational companies. We don’t have any form of development
in our area despite being the highest producer of gas in the country.
“We have numerous oil wells but
it is difficult to see the impact of our wealth in any community in ONELGA.
“If the Federal government fails
to respond, they will not like our reaction,”he said.
Also speaking a youth leader from
onelga Kingsley Uguwora said unemployment of the youths contributes to the
insecurity in the area.
Traditional Rulers Youth and
women leaders were also present at the press conference.
