The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, on Tuesday summoned an emergency meeting of the state security council over Monday’s shooting at the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji, during the installation of Baales.
The governor has also called all the traditional chiefs in the 11 local government areas of Ibadan for an emergency meeting in his office on Wednesday (today).
Four gunmen had opened fire on the palace repeatedly as three journalists, Olufemi Atoyebi of The PUNCH; his ThisDay counterpart, Demola Babalola; a correspondent with Daily Trust, Jeremiah Oke; a former Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Sharafadeen Alli; and others narrowly escaped death.
A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Alli, said that the meetings were called to forestall security breach in the state.
The statement read, “To forestall further security breach across Oyo State, the Governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has summoned an emergency meeting of the state security council, which has been scheduled for the Governor’s Office.
“The meeting is coming on the heels of recent events and developments in the state, especially the reported unwarranted shooting by some gunmen during a ceremony at the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji.
“The governor has also summoned a separate meeting of the traditional councils of the 11 local governments of Ibadan land, which are being headed by the members of the Obas-in-Council, who were formerly addressed as Olubadan-in-Council until their recent promotion. They are expected to meet with the governor at his office, on Wednesday (today).
“Expected at the meeting are the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan; Commissioner of Police at the state command; Director of Department of State Services; State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and heads of other security agencies in the state.
“Government notes the unacceptable development and warns that the pre-2011 era of brigandage and violence perpetrated by undesirable elements shall not be tolerated. Government assures all and sundry that such perpetrators who may be exploiting the opportunity of the developments on the Ibadan chieftaincy issue to repeat the mayhem experienced prior to the tenure of this administration, and who seem to be warming up to their traits, shall be fished out and made to face the law.”
