ASUU: Your action shocking, disappointing – Senate tells union

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, Senator Jibrin Barau, has expressed shock that the Association of Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has gone on strike.

He stated that a letter written to the Senate by ASUU of their intentions to embark on strike, which was the basis of their action was not in the best interest of the nation.

Barau said, Senate was already handling their grievances, and that it was not expected that they should go on strike now.
“We have good relationship with ASUU and that is why they take the Senate into confidence. But they seems to be missteps by the strike. Let them call off the strike and we will continue to dialogue”, the Chairman opined.
“I am optimistic that this is not the dead end. We are lawmakers and we monitor what happens, but let our children not stay at home,” he added.

According to him, ASUU explained that they did not have confidence in the Federal government over the 2009 negotiation which brothers on their allowances.

“In our appropriation this year, we took into cognizance those allowances they have been contesting for, so the Committee and entire Senate was surprised at the turn of events,” he insisted.

  2. ASUU I will not blame you at all. But the government officials that have vowed to make useless the education of the children of the maseses. I see a situation where one day the children of the poor will carry arms against the rich. Hospitals dead, education dead, energy dead, road dead. Now tell me one single thing about life that is positive in that space called Nigeria. God will judge everyone that has held public office in Nigeria. And especially religious leaders that fail to condem these events but rejoice when any govt official visit their place of worship. Ogwu m

  3. The statement credited to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, Senator Jibrin Barau, has proved that he does not know the things happening in our tertiary institutions in for some time now. Sir, will the senate allow their allowances to be owed for years and on top of that your salaries are being slashed. You guys sit in the red and green chambers squandering the resources of this country at the expense of the future of the children of this country. Is any of your child schooling in this country or in any public school?. Because you guys are only after your pockets, that is why you cannot see the rot in our tertiary institutions today. Don't worry, when you guys cause many children of the poor to drop out of school while your own children are sent abroad for their education; one day they will come back and those children you guys have made kidnappers and armed robbers will attack and kill your children. There shall be no peace for you guys that oppress the poor in this country.
