Theresa May is set to seek
permission from Buckingham Palace to form a new UK government after losing her
majority at House of Commons.
She is hoping that the Democratic
Unionists of Northern Ireland will support her minority administration.
Full results of election have now
been released in the following order of party, leader and seats.
Conservative, Theresa May, 319
Labour, Jeremy Corbyn, 261
Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon, 35
Liberal Democrat, Tim Farron, 12
Democratic Unionist Party, Arlene Foster, 10
Already, Corbyn has asked
May to quit, saying Labour is “ready to serve”.
May ended up with 12 fewer seats
than when she called the election and will need the support of other parties to
govern.
But she remains adamant,
insisting she will stay in office because the country needs “stability” with
the start of Brexit negotiations 10 days away.
Meanwhile, Labour says it is
ready to form a minority government of its own, after far exceeding
expectations by picking up 29 seats in England, Wales and Scotland.
But its coalition with others
would result in 313 seats – short of the 326 figure.
Conservatives, however, argued
that in the event of a stalemate at Parliament, May gets the opportunity to
form a government first, as her predecessor David Cameron did in 2010 when
there was also no clear winner.
