Biafra: Why is Obasanjo, IBB, Abdulsalam, others not talking on agitation? – Doyin Okupe

A former aide to the immediate past administration of Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has urged Nigerians to pray for the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo because he needs “wisdom from God” to handle the agitation for Biafra.

The former aide questioned why past leaders have refused to talk about the agitation in order to address some of the grievances raised. Those he blamed for remaining silent are Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsam Abubakar and TY Danjuma.

He made the remark while reacting to a video in which Igbo youths in their thousands besieged the compound of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, chanting “give us Biafra, give us Biafra.”

In a statement he signed, the former Presidential aide berated the federal government for not taking the issue of Biafra seriously.

He accused the government of pushing the Igbo people to the wall by not treating them fairly in the scheme of things in Nigeria.
Okupe also faulted the Presidency for not inviting Kanu during the recent consultation with leaders of thoughts from the South-East region.
He accused the federal government of making bad judgment when it comes to the situation of the Igbo people.
The statement reads, “There is indeed a “god” in Abuja. He is a very prideful and powerful god and his head office is in the Villa, the seat of power.
“Unlike Jehovah God, it does not give liberty to his subjects to exercise their will. He is captivating, imposing and compelling, forcing his will at random on his subjects and their subordinates.
“During President Obasanjo’s tenure, a very senior minister and a distinguished gentleman, during a period of national crisis, got up and with all his weight slammed the Presidents table and retorted vociferously ” Mr President, after God in this country, it is you, your word is law.!” When I heard that statement I knew it was god of Abuja that was speaking through the Hon. minister.
“Abuja itself is a Jerusalem of some sort. For as mountains souround Jerusalem, so they also souround Abuja, Also making it a naturally fortified city and giving a sense of comfort and safety to its Inhabitants . ( I pray my brother Femi fanikayode does not read this piece. if he does he will call me definitely to correct me about the comparison between the Holy city of Jerusalem and Abuja!!)
“The Abuja god and the water tight security of Abuja often times make the custodians of power make inadvertent misjudgements about the situations elsewhere in the country. And I should know haven been a victim and witness to such misjudgements several times while around the corridors of power.
“This morning I could not withhold the tears from my eyes when I saw the video of thousands of ibos, mostly youths, waving Biafran Flags and chanting in Nnamdi Kanu’s compound “all we are saying is give us Biafra”
“I cried because I empathised with them and I wondered how we managed to push a people to such a position of hopelessness and despair. I also fearfully wondered if by any act of commission or omission I have played any role in this ignoble act (s).
“Last week I wrote an open letter to the acting President . one of my recommendations was that the federal government meets with IPOB leadership and southeast stakeholders. “Unfortunately the God of Abuja speaking through the Ag. President said” the IPOB leaders are not members of the leaders if thought in the southeast.
“Yet in a country with a sitting government, the IPOB Leadership gives a sit at home order and it is obeyed in totality by the entire Igbo Nation.
“It has come to a sad point today that the IGBO and the actions or inaction of Prof Yemi Osinbajo will define the future of Nigeria.
“Yet I believe that there are still living legends of our time in this country who can move in to stop this dangerous insidious slipping into darkness.
“Why is obasanjo quiet? why is there no sound from IBB? What happened to soldier turned diplomat, Gen Abdusalam? Not a word from Gen Danjuma, Gen Gowon, Adamu Ciroma “Alex Ekweme, Chief Akinjide, Alani Akinriade and others?????
“If all the above elders and leaders who know the ropes stand aloof, why can’t the Ag. President take counsel from them privately and individually and deliver himself from the god of Abuja who always misleads his subjects until they are removed one way or the other.
“This is no longer an Igbo affair. It is a total NIGERIAN PROBLEM. Lets all put hands and heads together and find a solution, any peaceful solution before this impending National disaster overtakes our nation.
“In the meantime let the rest of the nation go on our knees and pray for Prof Osinbajo that the God of creation, who is greater than all other gods and who has saddled him, as Ag. President with the responsibility to lead the country at this time to give him the divine wisdom courage and genuine helpers to see our nation through these difficult times.”

  1. Pont of correction. It is not only the Igbo that are suffering in the land. People in all the zones are suffering. The issue of current agitation for Biafra is politically motivated by politicians like you because Jonathan lost the presidency. Why didn't we have similar agitation by the Igbo while Jonathan was in power? The past leaders understand this and that is why they are not talking. They are wiser than you. A wise Man should know when to talk and when not to talk. Who is KANU to hold the nation to ransom? Relevant people consider him to be of no relevance. Let him continue with his rattling. When he is tired he will stop. We have to understand that no section of Nigeria is irrelevant and no section is indispensable. If Biafra goes life in Nigeria will never come to an end. Life will continue.

  2. Very well spoken. You can see how they are proud of sit at home by Kanu, and how biafrans agitators besieged Kanu house chanting give us Biafra. They are backing Kanu in proxy, and nor matter how deviant they were igbos will never see it, but if non Igbo man do half of what they did they will start crying. Let's divide the country so that they can go and what ever they like. And leave us alone

    1. Thank you for making a point mukhtari that this country should be divided. You said if non Igbo do half of what Igbo did they will start crying? What is that that Igbo did? Excising their human right, sitting at home as a protest, for being exempted from presidency for over 50 years, for being seen as a 2nd class citizen in their own country, tell me what Igbo did! Let's us tell ourselves truth Igbo have uphold the peace unity that's holding this nation but Hausa has loved foreigner better than they love Igbos, who do think will lose most if this country breaks up? Hausa are capitalising on 2 things (a) That If they can provoke Igbo to war in the North Igbo are going to lose their properties and GOD FORBID lives. (b) that Yoruba are going to remain with them. But I will tell you the hard truth even even

  3. All commentators have a right to their opinions, but it would appear that you are/were a little out of touch with the reality of the civil war. That's exactly what the retired generals know better. Like Soyinka said not too long ago, any or every group of people have a right to any agitation regarding how they want to live and at the time of the civil war this much wasn't known to these generals. They are quiet because whatever they say may open up harder questions like:"why then did youfight the war?" And more.

  4. I believe the current agitation for biafra is politically motivated because I wonder why we do not have same when Jonathan was in power, would we still have the same agitation had Jonathan won in 2015?,having said that, the agitation is still a problem, the federal government shouldn't pretend all is well, there should be an urgent decentralization of power, the truth is it is not only the southeast region that are suffering, the marginalization cuts across board,we can't move forward with the way we are currently constituted, let us be divided into six geo political zones and let each region controls it's resources, leave the Niger delta with its oil,Facebook is a multi billion dollars business today,it was not achieved through any natural or mineral resources but simply through human capital development by ensuring every child are enrolled in schools,France and the US are making billions from chocolate yet no single cocoa tree is cultivated there,we need to break into smaller units to be competitive and bring prosperity to the grassroots.

  6. Nigerian Governors' Unity Agreement And Their Roles In Fuelling Separatism.

    My Comment:
That Governors met and reached a consensus concerning the coexistence of Nigerians does not make it the wishes of the masses even though the masses voted them in because the governors do not address the challenges of the masses, which are the things they were voted to address instead they subject the masses to endless hardships which have led some of the masses into committing suicide, jumping into lagoon, leaving the country to survive elsewhere, or joining kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism and the likes.

According to Ajimibi, “Nigerians are by nature a united people; nobody cares whether you are from the north, south or the east".
“Their unity must be there and we cannot play with the unity of this country. The consensus has been that there must be unity".

What kind of statement was that? Does the governors not aware of the events that had taken place and are still taking place in the country that distinctly show that people in Nigeria are badly divided along ethnic lines: how strategic positions in the country are ascended or given to Hausa-Fulani and their Yoruba collaborators leaving the Igbos as third-class citizens; and how people's tribal origins and affiliations are strictly considered before jobs, appointments, etc are given them, especially when it comes to Igbos? Maybe they should try and find out why the first coup of 1966 came into being. How Nigeria was badly divided along tribal lines at the time.

Also, Ajimobi said, "Any time you have agitation, usually there will be poverty, there will be unemployment, there will be a hardship. So, we should address fundamentally these areas of poverty, unemployment, and hardship."

If I may ask, who are the ones causing the hardships and poverty the citizens of Nigeria are languishing in? The hardships and poverty, are they not the consequences of bad governance? Are the governors not the ones embezzling and diverting public funds meant for the establishment of the people and the development of the states? Are they not the ones abandoning previous administration's projects and starting their own without completing them, in order to divert the funds and use them for campaign purposes? Are they not the ones living in mansions and the poor masses squatting in thatched and mud houses? Are they not the ones making promises during campaigns and fulfilling none?

Are they not the ones that bribe and rig themselves into offices? They bribe the people with peanuts and rig themselves into offices thereby subverting the wishes of the masses and subsequently acquire properties abroad with investment to cater for their unborn generation while keeping the masses in perpetual poverty. Are they not the ones underpaying civil servants, slashing their salaries and forcing them to sign that they received full salaries?

The truth remains that the Nigerian Governors have impoverished the masses and their bad governance has fuelled the agitation for separation because if they had been developing their individual States without betraying the trust people bestowed on them, the agitation for Biafra Republic, Oduduwa Republic or Arewa nation would not have been intensified at this time.

  8. Anonymous 10:27, my reasons are. In 2011 when Asari dokubo said if Jonathan did not win he will make the country ungovernable to who ever emerged as president nobody from the south caution him. And even in 2015 before the election Dokubo and some militants released thesame warning nobody says anything to counter them look at how Femi fani kayode, Fayose and radio Biafra have been insulting PMB and insulted the entired north where is Doyin Okupe and southern elites ???. We didn't hear their voice, igbos have been agitating for Biafra for long NO anyone from Igbo leaders asked them to stop it, but when Arewa youths back them and said northern igbos should go and help their brothers to actualize their dreams it becomes a problem, the youth even wrote to presidency to prepare ground for peaceful referendum, southerners start filling as if they were insulted. That's why I said if non Igbo did half of what igbos did they always crying.

  9. Thank you Dr. Doyin Okupe for the concern. We don't want to hear from such useless rulers by the way, Biafra State will be restored whether they talk or not. No human being can stop the restoration of the sovereign State of Biafra, whose time has come. Yoruba should fight for their freedom or continue to remain in the murderous Islamic sharia republic Nigeria.
