Assemblies of God excommunicates former leader

Leaders of the Assemblies of God have excommunicated a former General Superintendent of the church, Revd. Paul Emeka.

The development followed a fresh suit filed against the church by Emeka after a panel of justices of the Supreme Court dismissed an appeal he filed to challenge his removal as the church’s leader.

Following the Supreme Court ruling, the church, now led by the new General Superintendent, Revd. Chidi Okoroafor, recovered its Enugu national secretariat from Emeka with the aid of the police, but Emeka had launched a fresh campaign to take over the headquarters of the religious body.

It was gathered that Emeka had appealed to the Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, a fellow Nsukka man, for help in his quest to recover the church’s national secretariat from Okoroafor.

However, in apparent reaction to the development, the leaders of the church, under the aegis of the Incorporated Trustees of the Assemblies of God, Nigeria, have released a statement, in which they announced Emeka’s excommunication from the church.

The statement, signed by the General Secretary of the Assemblies of God, Nigeria, Revd. Dr. Godwin Amaowoh, stressed that Emeka was no longer a member, pastor or official of the church, having been dismissed for playing the role of an “Anti-Christ” in the religious organisation.

Parts of the statement read, “We, hereby, state unequivocally that apart from being dismissed as a pastor and excommunicated as a member of the church, Revd. Paul Emeka ceased to be a member of the Board of Trustees of the church from April 30, 2015, when the Corporate Affairs Commission removed him from that body.

“Revd. Emeka is not a member, pastor or officer of the church and he cannot lay claim to such privileges of membership by threat of violence or intimidation.”
