The Kogi Government on Friday threatened to terminate the appointment of any of its staff, under its health sector, that participates in the ongoing indefinite strike by doctors in the state.
The State’s acting Head of Service, Mrs Kehinde Lawal, made the threat in a circular she signed in Lokoja on Friday.
According to her, the state government will also adopt the policy of ‘no work no pay’ for any doctor on strike.
Lawal further said the government was doing its best to make sure that all the salary arrears of officials cleared by the screening committee were paid within the shortest time possible.
“It is equally noteworthy for every union to realise that the best way to resolve any issue is through peaceful dialogue and not strike action.
“In view of the foregoing, any staff of Kogi State Government that decides to go on strike is hereby notified that such person will have his/her job at stake.
“The policy of ‘No Work No Pay’ will be adopted for any worker that embarks on strike action,” she said.
The state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association has directed its members to embark on indefinite strike, claiming that the state government failed to pay salaries of its members, among other demands.
Barely 48 hours into the strike, health activities have been grounded in most state government-owned hospitals across the state.
A correspondent, who visited the state Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, showed that the ever busy hospital had few or no patients.
One of the patients, Mrs Jumai Usman, said that no doctor was on the ground to attend to her, adding that the development had forced many patients to patronise private hospitals.
She urged the state government and the NMA to dialogue and reach a mutual agreement, to save the lives of patients, especially the poor who could not afford the high cost of bills at the private hospitals.

A hungry man is an angry man. A poormy motivated doctor is worse than a quack. You don't expect them to give their best when they are not paid regularly for their services. Do you expect them to continue to come to work with empty stomachs? No work no pay rule is an outdated slogan. They wanted to work but you forced them to down tools bc they could no longer cope without their salaries.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, government of the day.. Where workers cannot express their dissatisfaction on their salaries anymore, instead, they are threatened with losing their job entirely.. Gov Bello, even u!!!!
ReplyDeleteGuys you know waht? Most of these guys in government are bunch of idiots.
ReplyDeleteAn expression of the governor's intellectual emptiness, how can he say such in a democratic era. I blame Nigerian who for fear of death keep mute and die in penury. If the youths of our time will awake and demand accountability from those in governance these evil and evil men will not prevail. Why die in silence? Let us arise and chase out these men to restore the glory of our nation.
ReplyDeleteHow does yahaya Bello become the governor of Kogi state? Was it not the dead of Prince audu that brought him from oblivion...? Maybe he's retarded if he can't cogitate the meaning of 'no work no pay'. Ask him whether he knows about the directive principles of state policy, and again let him remember that arrogancy, lack of tolerance are mere grounds for one's exist... I pray that God will show him mercy not to sit on peoples ' right. What do you think is legitimate in an illegitimate circumstance?
