The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed reports that it owes staff in its embassy in the United States. It, however, denied reports that the staff shut down the embassy in Washington DC.
The ministry said this in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Clement Aduku, on Wednesday.
It said efforts were being made to resolve the salary issue as soon as possible.
The statement read in part, “The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been drawn to the alleged shutdown of the embassy of Nigeria, Washington DC, USA on Tuesday due to a dispute over non-payment of salaries and working conditions.
“The ministry wishes to state that contrary to reports of a shutdown, the embassy is functioning properly and discharging its statutory diplomatic and consular responsibilities, though regrettably there is a delay in payment of salaries to some junior workers at the mission.
“However, efforts are being made to address the matter with utmost urgency. The ministry therefore wishes to assure the general public that the embassy of Nigeria, Washington DC is open for day-to-day operational activities and can be accessed with ease for all official matters.” Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

This is disgraceful and most shameful. Does the Minister for External Affairs really know his job accountabilities? You post people to represent your country in other countries, and you cannot assure their upkeep?
ReplyDeleteAmerica is not Nigeria. Workers will go on strike if not paid as stipulated in the contract, not to mention owing workers months of wages. That will result in lawsuits and shutdown of the company or business. Nigeria still acts like a third-world country no matter where they are located. What a shame and international embarrassment.
