A London -based Nigerian couple were on Friday convicted by a Southwark Crown Court in London for trafficking a “slave nanny” into the United Kingdom from Nigeria.
Judge Martin Beddoe warned that Ayodeji Adewakun, a 44- year old medical doctor and wife, Abimbola Adewakun, a 48 -year old nurse, face “a significant sentence of immediate imprisonment.”
They were granted bail until June 16 when they will be sentenced.
The couple had lured the woman to the UK from Nigeria with promise of £500 per monthly salary.
They confiscated the woman’s passport as soon as she arrived in February 2007 and subjected her to “constant demands and verbal abuse.”
She managed to escape two years later after finally receiving just £350 – the equivalent of a wage of £15 a month.
Jurors were unable to reach a verdict in relation to Dr. Adewakun on a charge of trafficking a second alleged victim.
The man was cleared of that charge.
The couple allegedly persuaded the woman to come and care for their two children in Erith, south-east London, years earlier in 2005.
The 37-year-old victim told Southwark Crown Court she was later forced to work all day cleaning the house, cook for the family and was even woken if the doctor got home late and wanted a snack. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

If this is true. Lagbara Olohun koni dara fun yin ati gbogbo n kan ti e ba achieve by enslaving this woman. Already living in this part of world is slavery and you further enslave a fellow human being like you. What a wicked world? We all live here and know how hard this place is. I hope this young woman can find solace and move on in her life.
ReplyDeleteThey are very wicked animals from Nigeria. Jail them to 20 to 30 yrs.

ReplyDeleteThis is not about wicked animals from nigeria, that is our wicked a typical Nigeria can be. It is the same here in Nigeria. It is widely practised here, it just the weak local legal system that has not prevented it locally. Have we asked our self why people still suffer in the country that has abundance resources? So, stop blaming a scape goat. Look internally and seek corrections in all institutions and culture. I wonder why Nigerians are always quick to show holier than thou attitude when anomalies take the order of the day everywhere.
